A swatting call at the Rome, Georgia, residence of Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is under investigation by authorities on Christmas Day.
“I was just swatted,” Greene wrote on Monday morning’s X social media post. For the eighth time, I plead. Enjoying Christmas with my loved ones here.
According to Kelly Madden, a police information specialist, a man from Rome, New York, who may have been contacting the suicide prevention hotline on Monday, claimed to have shot his girlfriend at Greene’s Georgia address in Rome, Georgia. This information was relayed to 911. Additionally, the caller had made suicide threats.
As authorities were on their way to the residence, Greene’s security team was alerted by the Rome Police, who notified them that nothing was wrong with the home, according to Madden. According to Madden, before the police reached the residence, they were redirected.
The local police force is absolutely fantastic and absolutely does not deserve to be involved in this, Greene noted in her statement. “They mean the world to me, and I am overjoyed to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ with my family!”
The goal of a hoax call to the police, known as “switching,” is to trick them into going to a certain site (often a house) where they are made to believe a terrible crime has been done or is happening. Because of this, local police or SWAT teams respond aggressively, even though they have no idea the call is fake.
Rep. Brandon Williams (R-NY) recounted his own experience of being swatted on Christmas Day in an X post.
The lawmaker reported that their residence had been targeted earlier in the day. The Troopers and Deputies who called ahead of time are much appreciated. Spiced nuts and handmade cookies were their departure gifts! Have a wonderful holiday season!
The congressman’s residence was the target of a swatting incident on Monday, according to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck. According to him, the sheriff’s office and the New York State Police were called “to a report of a reported confessed shooting incident” at Williams’ residence shortly after 2 p.m.
Schenk stated, “This report was quickly confirmed to be false,” and added that his agency is currently conducting an investigation.
U.S. Capitol Police told HEADLINESFOREVER on Tuesday that they help with “swatting” incidents involving lawmakers, but they wouldn’t elaborate on what happened recently because of ongoing investigations and their desire to “minimise the risk of copy-cats.”
Multiple swatting instances at Greene’s home prompted authorities to attend, according to HEADLINESFOREVER’s August 2022 article. Greene, her family, and her staff were threatened with murder by a guy from Georgia, who was charged with the crime last month.
Monday, Madden stated, “We have received a call of this nature…” before this one. It was decided that there was really no emergency, and we do have a strong relationship with her security detail.
Rome is a part of Greene’s 14th Congressional District in Georgia. Some on the left have criticised the conservative firebrand for her contentious and polarising remarks. After being kicked out of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus earlier this year for speaking out against her fellow members and sticking with Republican leadership, she has also been met with criticism from the right wing of her party.
