In its first official attribution for the incident, the US believes that an umbrella organisation of terrorists named Islamic Resistance in Iraq was responsible for the drone assault in Jordan that killed three American military personnel. The White House made this announcement on Wednesday.
“We believe that the attack in Jordan was planned, resourced and facilitated by an umbrella group called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which contains multiple groups including Kata’ib Hezbollah,” stated John Kirby, spokesperson for the National Security Council.
He avoided directly blaming Kata’ib Hezbollah, claiming that other groups were also responsible for earlier attacks on US bases.
“Our intelligence community is comfortable with the attribution that this was done by the umbrella group called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq,” he continued, “but it definitely has the hallmarks of what Kata’ib Hezbollah does.”
This strike marked the first time American soldiers had been directly attacked in the Middle East since the October 7th attack by Hamas on Israel, and it was also the most severe of numerous attacks that have targeted US personnel in the region since then.
The servicemembers who lost their lives were named as Sgt. Breonna Moffett (23 years old), Sgt. Kennedy Sanders (24 years old) of Waycross, Georgia; and Sgt. William Rivers (46 years old) of Carrollton, Georgia. Sanders and Moffett were promoted from specialist to sergeant posthumously, according to the Army Reserve.
Officials added that Biden will attend a respectful handover at Dover Air Force Base on Friday after speaking with the families of all three servicemembers on Tuesday.
More than 40 American soldiers were wounded, and three were killed. The three wounded soldiers were airlifted to a German hospital on Tuesday night for additional treatment. Despite one being in serious condition, all three are said to be stable.
Kirby stated that the United States would launch a multi-stage counterattack in response to the strike.
“The first thing you see won’t be the last thing,” he remarked later, adding, “We will respond on our own time on our own schedule.”
According to him, US intelligence is keeping an eye out for any indications that regional factions are redistributing their resources in anticipation of the US counterstrike.
On Tuesday, Biden informed reporters that he had already made a decision regarding the response to the hit; however, he did not specify what that response would be.
