The current mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, is being sued under the Adult Survivors Act for alleged sexual assault that occurred 30 years ago.
The claims are the latest challenges for the mayor of the nation’s largest city as he now battles with a federal inquiry into his campaign funds.
The plaintiff contends that in 1993, while both were municipal employees, Adams, a former NYPD officer, sexually abused her. The Messenger was the first to disclose that a summons had been filed in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan late on Wednesday.
HEADLINESFOREVER is withholding the plaintiff’s name, but a representative for the mayor said that he was unaware of the lawsuit.
“If they ever met, he doesn’t recall it,” the spokeswoman for City Hall stated. But he strongly refutes any suggestion that he would ever intentionally do physical harm to another individual.
Adams later re-iterated these identical comments to the press.
“It simply did not happen. No, I don’t think I’ve ever met this individual before. And I’m not the type to cause serious harm to somebody. Adams categorically denied that this had occurred. Let nature take its course; the process will take its time. But that did not take place. And I’ve never presented myself that way in my career, nor do I intend to start now.
The plaintiff’s attorney did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
Adams, New York City, the NYPD’s Transit Bureau, and the NYPD Guardian Association are all named as defendants in the lawsuit.
The plaintiff is demanding at least $5,000,000 in damages.
“The claims brought here allege intentional and negligent acts and omissions for physical, psychological, and other injuries suffered as a result of conduct that would constitute sexual offences,” it states.
There were scant other information about the alleged assault on the three-page summons. It will likely be followed up with a more formal legal complaint.
This Thursday marks the end of the Adults Survivors Act’s one-year lookback period. The law made it possible to sue in civil court for sexual misconduct no matter how long ago the alleged offence occurred.
Famous people like former President Trump and Harvey Weinstein have been sued under the legislation.
Adams’ current legal problems stem from charges of sexual assault.
The FBI seized his electronic devices and conducted raids on his staff in an investigation into his 2021 mayoral campaign, which is under investigation for possible cooperation with the Turkish government.
Adams’s lawyers (both for his campaign and the city) insist he has not been accused of any misconduct. He is reportedly helping investigators out in every way possible.
