Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) set off the fire alarm during a tumultuous vote on a stopgap funding bill, but the House Ethics committee stated on Wednesday that it would not investigate him.

Bowman had been charged with a misdemeanour by the D.C. Attorney General last month for the fire alarm incident, kicking off the Ethics panel’s process for examining a politician. Republicans and Democrats on the ethics committee reached a unanimous decision against creating an investigation subpanel and submitting a report to the full House. Bowman agreed to pay the maximum fee after pleading guilty to a misdemeanour charge last month for setting off the false fire alarm.

According to Ethics Committee Chair Michael Guest (R-Miss.) and ranking member Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.), “a majority of the Members of the Committee did not agree to establish a [Investigative Subcommittee] or report to the House regarding Representative Bowman’s conduct.”

A message left with Bowman’s office seeking comment went unanswered. He has denied the claims made by several of his Republican detractors that he set off the alarm in order to hinder or delay legislative proceedings.
