Representative Bob Good was subjected to direct questioning by members of the far-right House Freedom Caucus at last week’s chairmanship election over one of his most contentious actions inside the Republican Party: his support for Ron DeSantis over Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.

An individual familiar with the conversation said that Good’s response was that he would eventually back Trump if the GOP nominated him for president. However, Good explained that he initially supported the young governor of Florida because he believed it would be better to have a candidate who could serve eight more years rather than four.

This week, the irate Republican from Virginia was finally elected to lead the House Freedom Caucus. This prominent position will place him at the centre of some of the most contentious budget battles next year and pit him against Mike Johnson, the new speaker, who will have to negotiate with Democrats.

Unreported as of yet, the conversation regarding DeSantis implies that Good’s assumption of leadership responsibilities inside the House Freedom Caucus, which includes the former president’s most loyal supporters, was met with some scepticism. Also, Good’s reelection opponent, a Republican who is pro-Trump, is trying to use his endorsement from DeSantis to hurt Good’s own reelection campaign.

Not only has Good crossed with Trump this year, but he was also one of the few conservatives who voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as speaker in October, sending the House into weeks of disarray and dysfunction as Republicans fought vehemently amongst themselves to choose a new speaker, finally deciding on Johnson.

Good insists he will hold Johnson to account and says he doesn’t regret ditching McCarthy for DeSantis, even though he has alienated other Republicans in the process. The 58-year-old conservative claimed he is unconcerned about his current GOP primary opponent as a result.

In my lifetime, I have never seen a governor as remarkable as he is. To top it all off, Good told HEADLINESFOREVER that he believes he provides us the upper hand in the battleground states. According to the surveys, the majority of Republicans do not agree with me on that. Still, Iowa will tell the story. If they are both nominated, I will wholeheartedly support them. My support for Governor DeSantis, however, is unwavering.

Good responded to the question of whether he is worried about Trump challenging him in the primary by saying, “I respect President Trump and I look forward to having a great working relationship with him in whatever capacity.” He went on to say that he would support Trump if he became the nominee and referred to Trump as “the best president of my lifetime.”

With Good’s promotion to head of the powerful conservative group, others are unhappy. The action was criticised as a “major mistake” and “controversial” by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who has ties to both McCarthy and Trump and was expelled from the Freedom Caucus earlier this year.

Many people who have donated to the House Freedom Fund are unhappy about it. Telling HEADLINESFOREVER, “They’re not fans of him,” Greene continued. What this means for Trump’s potential government is that it poses serious problems. A traitor, he is. A betrayer, in essence. He was unallegiant to President Trump, even though the president had backed his 2020 congressional campaign.

Along with claiming to have met with Good’s Republican opponent John McGuire, Greene hinted that she may “possibly” become engaged in the primary race.

If Good’s opponent is any indication, Greene had nothing but praise for him. He is quite loyal to President Trump, that much is clear to me. Which is something I enjoy.

Maybe because some of their own members have backed other candidates, but the vast majority of the Freedom Caucus has put Good’s endorsement of DeSantis aside and is confident in his capacity to collaborate with Trump. According to Republicans who spoke with HEADLINESFOREVER, he is a suitable choice to lead the group into its next chapter since his support for fiscal conservatism, no-holds-barred style, and disagreements with leadership are consistent with the group’s fundamental purpose.

“Bob possesses incredible intelligence. Liberalism isn’t his thing. Nikki Haley’s ally, South Carolina Representative Ralph Norman, who is a member of the Freedom Caucus, has stated that Haley will do whatever is necessary to further the group’s agenda.

Concerns over Good’s decision-making regarding DeSantis or McCarthy were also disregarded by Norman. All of us are free thinkers. “We’re all autonomous contractors,” he declared.

However, a large number of Republicans accuse the Freedom Caucus collectively of stifling the party’s agenda and resorting to bold methods in order to achieve their desired outcomes.

Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) indicated that the Freedom Caucus was “mainly to blame” for the GOP’s agenda stagnating this year.

However, as Good assumes his new position, he will face concerns within the Freedom Caucus and within his district regarding his actions regarding DeSantis and McCarthy. Additionally, he will be responsible for guiding the group through a number of high-profile disputes concerning federal spending and the possible impeachment of President Joe Biden, two issues that are extremely important to them.

Regarding Good’s endorsement of DeSantis, for instance, “I think there are concerns at every layer,” a member of the Freedom Caucus told HEADLINESFOREVER. “Can the organisation maintain its effectiveness? That is the concern. Could it be that the brand changes and adopts Bob’s personality, or that Bob adopts the personality of the old company? In the opinion of many, that is not entirely compatible.

As senators attempt to reach an immigration deal in order to release aid to Ukraine and Israel, Good said that he is pressing Johnson to not budge from the hard-line immigration bill that passed the House earlier this year because “that’s our position.” The faction is also planning to fight for control of federal spending in the early months of 2019.

“We want to work with the speaker to accomplish the things that Republicans ran on, that Republicans stand for,” Good said, urging the GOP to work together in support of increased spending cuts. “And our own conference is having trouble keeping its promise to do that.”

However, there was some controversy surrounding Good’s appointment as head of the Freedom Caucus. Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio informed his colleagues in a letter that he would not run for reelection to the group’s board following Good’s recommendation, citing concerns that Good would “impair” their primary goals. This information was first reported by Axios and was obtained by HEADLINESFOREVER.

When HEADLINESFOREVER asked Davidson for a response on the letter, Davidson declined.
