Jesse Walden, a photographer who was injured in the incident, claimed from his hospital bed that his colleague Dylan Lyons was his best friend and a “nice person” who was hit by a round from the gunman’s pistol while in the passenger seat of his car.
A photographer has recalled the moment his journalist colleague was killed in a shooting in Florida that injured him and killed a nine-year-old girl and a mother.
The culprit, believed to be Keith Melvin Moses, 19, shot and killed Nathacha Augustin, 38, in Pine Hills, west of Orlando, before moving on to a neighbouring home and fatally shooting T’yonna Major, nine, and badly injuring her mother.
He returned to the scene some hours later, shooting and killing 24-year-old Dylan Lyons, who was reporting the incident for Spectrum News 13, and injuring photographer Jesse Walden.
Mr Walden told NBC News affiliate KOB in Albuquerque about the moment his colleague was shot.
“Dylan was a reporter with whom I worked every day. We were the best of friends.
“He was a really kind guy.
Mr Walden stated that he was taking his camera from the back of his colleague’s car when he heard bullets and felt pain in his groyne.
“I notice he’s shooting at me. I assumed he was shooting at a home or something behind me, and I just happened to get hit.
“Yet, he kept shooting at me.”
Mr. Walden stated that he crouched beneath the wheel of his automobile as the gunman approached and fired into the vehicle.
Dylan Lyons, who was riding in the passenger seat, was slain.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office also released dramatic bodycam footage of Moses, the suspect, being apprehended.
Moses screams “let me go” and “I can’t breathe” at the officers after being tackled to the ground in the expletive-laden video.
“It’s still hot,” Moses adds as one officer removes a revolver from his pocket.
In other images published by the police, Moses looks to be smirking as he is led away.
Moses has been legally charged with Ms Augustin’s murder, with whom he was acquainted.
Further charges are expected to be filed against the other four victims, who were unknown to him.
According to authorities, the adolescent has an extensive criminal past that includes accusations involving firearms, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, and theft.
